Welcome to Stanford University’s Learning Design Challenge!
Stanford University is known for its flourishing entrepreneurial ecosystem, while the Graduate School of Education is recognized for its deep focus on inclusion and accessibility. These commitments come together in the Learning Design Challenge, where teams of students from across campus develop inclusive and accessible learning solutions through innovation and entrepreneurship.
How does it work?
The Learning Design Challenge
begins with a series of
for-credit courses and
mentoring sessions
followed by opportunities
to pitch for funding.
Who can participate?
We encourage Stanford students
from across campus to participate
in the Learning Design Challenge.
Non-Stanford students can join
as long as one team member
is a current Stanford student.
How do I sign up?
Sign up for
Learning Design Workshop,
EDUC 254, in Axess.
This variable 1-2 credit course
can be taken both Winter
and Spring Quarters.
Why Participate in the Learning Design Challenge?
The program’s for-credit courses are designed to grow your capacities and networks. Workshops focus on human-centered design, learning sciences, game design thinking, team building, fundraising, accessibility & inclusion, and technical implementation, as well as how to sustain your project as a for-profit or non-profit start-up, social enterprise, and/or academic research project.

Participants learn from experienced mentors who provide support in the research, design, development, user testing, iteration, and pitching of their projects. Mentors include top experts from Stanford, Silicon Valley, and across the globe, as well as program alumni and near-peers with experience in the design, development, and implementation of leading-edge digital learning tools and environments.
The Learning Design Challenge and its collaborators provide students with opportunities to win design awards and scholarships as they work through processes of ideation and prototyping, providing support and practice in developing and delivering effective pitches for the program’s $1,500 Winter Quarter Prototyping Awards along with our $9,000 Spring Quarter Research-to-Practice Awards.
New students and program alumni are connected in a thriving community of innovators, consisting of for-profit and non-profit startups, social enterprises, academic researchers, and others who draw on the background of Stanford faculty and Silicon Valley experts with experience leveraging the Learning Sciences, Human-Centered Design, Game Design, and leading-edge technologies like AI and VR/AR to produce unique learning solutions.
